900,000 dementia patients in US nursing homes face increased violence due to inadequate staffing and training.

The rampant issue of violence in dementia care facilities is highlighted by a recent article in the Sun Sentinel, where violent altercations between dementia patients have become common across the U.S. Over 900,000 people with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia live in nursing homes and assisted living centers, with some facilities admitting and retaining residents they cannot manage, leading to potential conflicts and contributing to the problem of insufficient staffing and inadequate training. Gerontologist Karl Pillemer from Cornell University suggests creating models of violence-free zones in long-term care facilities to help address this issue.
