Workers at two Victoria long-term care homes have expressed safety concerns as some residents smoke illicit drugs, including methamphetamine. Staff at The Summit and Dufferin Place, which house complex medical and mental health issues residents, demand no-smoking rule enforcement, full-time security, and specialized clinicians. Island Health plans to build separate facilities for such residents, but the process could take over a year.
