Weekend warrior exercise pattern linked to lower risks of dementia, stroke, and Parkinson's in UK Biobank study.
Study in Nature Aging suggests exercising as a "weekend warrior", where individuals meet physical activity guidelines by accumulating more than 50% of their activity across one to two days, can offer similar brain and mental health benefits as those who exercise regularly throughout the week. Over 75,000 people from the UK Biobank were analyzed, with weekend warriors showing a 26% lower risk of dementia, 21% lower risk of stroke, and 45% lower risk of Parkinson's disease compared to inactive adults. The study's protective associations against depression and anxiety were consistent across age groups, reflecting the significant benefits of physical activity for older adults at higher risk of these conditions.
