KiwiRail data shows rail freight reduced NZ CO2 emissions by 229,434 tonnes in FY2024, saving fuel and reducing truck trips.

KiwiRail data reveals that rail freight in NZ reduced CO2 emissions by 229,434 tonnes in the financial year ending June 2024, compared to truck transportation. This also avoided a million heavy truck trips, alleviating road congestion and saving 84.7 million litres of fuel. KiwiRail plans to improve its rail network and replace old locomotives with low-emission diesel ones, helping the country meet emission reduction targets.
