Augusta University researchers study eye changes in astronauts during spaceflights to understand Spaceflight Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome and develop countermeasures.

Augusta University's Medical College of Georgia researchers are studying eye changes in astronauts during spaceflights as part of the Polaris Dawn mission, aiming to understand the mechanisms behind Spaceflight Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome (SANS) affecting over 70% of astronauts. SANS causes vision symptoms like vision loss and needing glasses, potentially due to a shift in cerebrospinal fluid in the optic nerve sheath. Researchers use portable handheld ultrasound scanners to visualize damage from pressure and fluid changes in the optic nerve sheath, with the goal of developing countermeasures and improving human spaceflight capabilities.
