South Africa's Cabinet welcomes the arrest of a kidnapping-for-ransom syndicate ringleader, linked to a R300m crystal meth seizure. The government supports multidisciplinary law enforcement teams to tackle high crime rates and urges citizens to work with law enforcement agencies. The Cabinet plans to release quarterly crime statistics in Aug and Nov 2024, and Feb and May 2025, and calls for municipalities to clean storm-water drains ahead of the rainy season. The Cabinet is also concerned about increasing teenage pregnancies and rising unemployment, up to 33.5% in Q2 2024.
