India's NDMA approves Rs 150 crore program for GLOF risk mitigation in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh.

India's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has approved a Rs 150 crore program to mitigate the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in four states: Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh. This program involves technical hazard assessments, automated weather and water level monitoring stations, and early warning systems at lakes and downstream areas. The program includes lake-lowering measures, civil engineering, and community awareness. This initiative comes after the catastrophic GLOF event in South Lhonak lake in Sikkim in October 2023.
