India's FSSAI orders removal of 'A1' and 'A2' milk type labels, citing misleading claims.
India's Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) has ordered food businesses and e-commerce platforms to remove claims of 'A1' and 'A2' milk types from packaging, stating that such labeling is misleading. The FSSAI found that the differentiation between A1 and A2 milk is linked to the structure of beta-casein protein in milk, but the current FSSAI regulations do not recognize this distinction. Businesses have been given six months to phase out pre-printed labels without extensions, and e-commerce platforms have also been instructed to remove these claims from their products and websites. The FSSAI's decision to eliminate misleading claims is supported by industry chairman Devendra Shah, who considers A1 and A2 milk product categories as marketing gimmicks and notes that this trend is fading globally.
