India resumes long-delayed population census in September, following a COVID-19 postponement from 2021.
India is set to start its long-delayed population census in September, according to two government sources. Postponed from its original 2021 date due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the census is expected to last 18 months and conclude in March 2026. Critics argue that the delay has impacted the accuracy of various statistical surveys, including economic data, inflation, and job estimates, all of which currently rely on the 2011 census. The Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation are finalizing plans to release the census results covering a 15-year period.
