Assam CM announces bill for compulsory govt registration of Muslim marriages & divorces, setting age limit at 18.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a bill requiring compulsory government registration of marriages and divorces among the Muslim community in the state. The decision was made during a state cabinet meeting and the Muslim Marriage Registration Bill 2024 aims to ensure that Muslim marriage registrations are conducted by the government, not Kazis, and prohibits marriage registrations below the age of 18. The bill is set to be introduced in the upcoming state assembly session starting from August 22.
