Virginia's teacher shortage is predicted to reach 4,500 vacancies for the 2024-25 school year, up 230 from the previous year. The state's teacher vacancy rate has increased annually since 2020, currently at 4.74%. Schools serving low-income students will receive $371.3m in additional funding over the next two school years. The Virginia Department of Education is working with 28 school divisions on a "grow-your-own" approach to train community members to become teachers, offering over $1.5m in grants to local school divisions.
