Study finds link between Modic changes and lumbar spine microbial diversity in relation to severe low back pain.

A study in The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery found that Modic changes in patients undergoing lumbar spinal fusion are linked to differences in microbial diversity and metabolites in lumbar cartilaginous endplates. Modic changes, detected on MRI, may lead to severe low back pain and are related to lumbar disc herniation. This research suggests that changes in microbiota disrupt unsaturated fatty acid metabolism within LCEPs, potentially influencing the onset and progression of Modic changes. The study's findings may lead to new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for conditions related to Modic changes.
