St. Mary's Home for Children, a Rhode Island mental health institution, is set to close due to financial challenges and facing scrutiny for abuse and mismanagement.

St. Mary's Home for Children, a historic Rhode Island institution that provided mental and behavioral health services, is set to close amid financial challenges. The facility has been under scrutiny for abuse, mismanagement, and chaos. Its closure would further limit options for children in Rhode Island needing intensive mental health services, with 81 children currently receiving services in other states at an annual cost of $35 million. St. Mary's has provided outpatient services to over 100 children and school programs for 24. The planned $11 million, 12-bed addition to St. Mary's has been paused by the state Department of Children, Youth & Families.
