NHS Blood and Transplant researchers, in collaboration with medical logistics company Apian, have demonstrated the feasibility and safety of drone deliveries for blood components. The study involved sending identical stocks of packed red blood cell components by both drone and ground vehicle, covering a distance of 68 km over the Northumbrian coastline. Results showed no significant differences in the blood's biochemical or haematological profiles, indicating that drone delivery does not affect blood's quality or longevity, suggesting it as a safe mode of transport. The research team plans to conduct a similar trial for blood platelets.
