Saanich Police Department in British Columbia removes surnames from public alerts seeking help to locate missing individuals to avoid causing them future harm and to prevent their identity from becoming part of a permanent public record. The policy has the support of BC's Information and Privacy Commissioner. The move comes as more law enforcement agencies across Canada adopt similar practices. The department has issued three public assistance requests since implementing the change, and in each instance, the person was located.
