2022 Indian protests over kindergarten girl assault lead to Shakti Bill re-request for Presidential assent.

Indian protests erupted over the sexual assault of two kindergarten girls in Badlapur, leading Uddhav Thackeray, former Maharashtra Chief Minister, to call for the Shakti Bill's passage. The bill aims to amend the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, while introducing the death penalty for specific severe crimes such as rape and gang rape. The Shakti Bill has been awaiting Presidential assent since 2021, and Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has urged President Droupadi Murmu to expedite the process, emphasizing its importance for women's safety.
