Illinois appeals court overturns permit for Grain Belt Express, citing insufficient evidence of financing.

An Illinois appeals court has overturned the state regulators' approval of a permit for the Illinois segment of the Grain Belt Express (GBX), an 800-mile high-voltage transmission line that would transport renewable electricity from wind farms. The Grain Belt Express, owned by Chicago-based Invenergy, has faced opposition from the Illinois Farm Bureau and other groups, who argue that the company lacks the necessary funding to complete the development. The appeals court decision cited insufficient evidence to support the Illinois Commerce Commission's finding that GBX is capable of financing the project without customers, contracts, or commitments. Invenergy plans to appeal the decision to the Illinois Supreme Court.
