Controlled explosion for demolition of collapsed 100-year-old Sioux City BNSF train bridge, to be replaced with thru-plate girder bridge in 9 months.

A controlled explosion was carried out on 19 August for the demolition of a BNSF train bridge in Sioux City that collapsed due to flooding in June. The bridge, which has stood for over 100 years, will be replaced with a modern thru-plate girder bridge. The demolition process will take place in two stages, with the first explosion on the South Dakota side and the second on the Iowa side in September. The entire demolition process is estimated to take nine months, with reconstruction starting after both halves of the bridge are removed.
