US regional lenders are increasing mergers and acquisitions (M&A) to strengthen their balance sheets and compete with larger banks. Regional banks have made 38 deals so far this year, compared to 29 in the same period last year. Over two-thirds of lenders in the KBW Regional Banking Index have a high chance of being acquired in the next 12 months, due to factors like elevated interest rates and competition for deposits.
