Melbourne's North East Link tunneling project, backed by Australian and Victorian governments, begins with two TBMs named after Zelda D'Aprano and Gillian Opie, aiming to reduce truck traffic and travel times.

The North East Link tunneling project in Melbourne has begun, with the first of two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) named after Zelda D'Aprano and Gillian Opie. The 6.5 km tunnel between Watsonia and Bulleen aims to remove 15,000 trucks from local roads and reduce travel times by up to 35 minutes. The project is backed by the Australian and Victorian governments, with a total budget of $26.1 billion. The TBMs will dig up to 15 meters/day and use locally produced concrete segments for tunnel walls. Renewable energy will power construction, and 12,000 jobs will be created before the 2028 completion.
