2022 long COVID in Australia cost $9.6bn due to lost working hours and accounted for a quarter of economic growth increase.
A study by the Australian National University, UNSW, and the University of Melbourne estimates long COVID cost Australia $9.6bn in 2022 due to lost working hours, accounting for a quarter of the nation's economic growth increase. 9,900 people died from COVID-19 in 2022, and between 310,000-1.3m people were living with long COVID in Sept, with numbers expected to decrease to 173-873,000 by the end of 2022. The study suggests addressing long COVID as a public health priority and recommends widening access to boosters and antivirals to reduce its impact.
