An African elephant calf was born at Fresno Chaffee Zoo, marking its first elephant birth.

Fresno Chaffee Zoo in California has marked a historical moment with the birth of an African elephant calf as part of its elephant breeding program. The zoo had not previously experienced an elephant birth. Nolwazi, the mother, and her calf are under round-the-clock surveillance. Another elephant, Amahle, is expected to give birth in the coming weeks. Animal activists have criticized the zoo's elephant program, arguing that elephants have complex needs better suited to sanctuaries.
