23,000 to 45,000-year-old mammoths lived on Vancouver Island, according to a new study by Laura Termes.

A new study by Laura Termes of Simon Fraser University found mammoths lived on Vancouver Island for 23,000 to 45,000 years ago, longer than previously thought. Termes analyzed 32 mammoth samples, with the youngest dating back to 23,000 years and the oldest beyond radiocarbon dating range, suggesting it was older than 45,000 years. The study shows mammoths thrived during periods of changing temperatures and glacier sheets, indicating they adapted to a landscape of grasses, spruce, and pine trees.
