Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has criticized "self-centered leaders" for hindering the nation's socioeconomic and political progress. Speaking at the Leadership Empowerment International Conference in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasanjo called for an end to the culture of electing self-centered "transactional leaders" and for more transformational leaders to be elected, who will deliver good governance. He emphasized that if Nigeria can improve its leadership quality, it can overcome its existing challenges.
