1970-built Waterloo's Crossroads Mall is now a ghost mall after losing all anchor stores.

Waterloo's Crossroads Mall, built in 1970 and once a popular shopping destination, has been classified as a "ghost mall" after losing all five of its anchor stores. J.C. Penny closed in 2015, followed by Sears and Yonkers in 2018, Gordman's and Dillard's in 2020, and finally At Home in November 2023. Although there have been discussions about the city of Waterloo purchasing the property to revitalize the mall, no concrete plans have been made. In contrast, Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville remains a relevant and thriving shopping destination with over 100 stores.
