Washington State sold retired ferries Elwha and Klahowya to Ecuadorian company Nelson Armas for $100k each, to be recycled and reduce maintenance costs.

Retired Washington State ferries Elwha and Klahowya, with 50 years of service, were sold for $100,000 each to Ecuadorian company Nelson Armas, who plans to recycle the steel at his green steel mill facility. The sale frees docking space and reduces maintenance costs for Washington State Department of Transportation. Both ferries were decommissioned in 2020 (Elwha) and 2017 (Klahowya) and transported to Eagle Harbor by a towing tugboat before being moved to South America.
