5,704 teaching positions in Quebec remain unfilled before the new school year, despite a 2,800 decrease in vacancies and an increase of 20,000 students.

5,704 teaching positions in Quebec remain unfilled just days before the start of the new school year, despite a 2,800 decrease in vacancies compared to last year. The Education Minister attributes this to an increase of about 20,000 more students in the province. Of the unfilled positions, 1,406 are for permanent, full-time roles, with the rest being contract jobs. A new collective agreement requiring teachers to accept class assignments by August 8th is credited for the reduction in vacancies; however, unions argue that the education network still faces a significant labor shortage.
