3rd Mekong Irrawaddy dolphin death in Cambodia due to illegal gillnet; Ministry urges fishermen to stop using gillnets and report violations.

2024 marks Cambodia's 3rd death of a rare Mekong Irrawaddy dolphin, this time due to entanglement in an illegal gillnet. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries urges fishermen to cease using gillnets and electro-fishing in the dolphin-protected area and to report any violations. The Mekong Irrawaddy dolphins, critically endangered since 2004, have an estimated population of 105 living along a 180-km main channel of the Mekong River.
