Research from Amsterdam UMC led by Suzanne Geerlings shows a strategy reducing inappropriate IV use by a third over five years, possibly cutting infections in one-tenth of patients. A study of 1,100 patients over five years showed a 37% reduction in unnecessary catheters. The strategy altered workflow in four hospitals and demonstrates that temporary investments in time or leadership can reduce unnecessary IV and catheter use.
