Hurricane Ernesto closed NYC beaches in Brooklyn and Queens, with high surf and rip current alerts, while Long Island beaches remained open with safety warnings.
Due to Hurricane Ernesto, NYC beaches in Brooklyn and Queens were closed over the weekend, including those in Coney Island, Brighton Beach, Manhattan Beach, Rockaway and Riis beaches. The National Weather Service issued alerts for high surf and rip currents along the Atlantic coast, with lifeguards remaining on duty and swimming prohibited for safety reasons. Beaches on Long Island were not closed but warned beachgoers to exercise caution. Hurricane Ernesto made landfall in Bermuda and was expected to weaken and move off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, with more storms predicted in the coming weeks as September is peak hurricane season.
