Ethiopia introduces Chinese-made electric minibuses as part of a transition to green mobility and ban on gasoline/diesel vehicle imports.

Ethiopia is transitioning to green mobility with Chinese-made electric minibuses, part of the government's initiative to ban gasoline or diesel vehicle imports. The move aims to reduce rising fuel costs and pollution, with over $6 billion spent on fuel imports in 2023, and 1.2 million vehicles in the country being mostly secondhand imports. Local company Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex assembles electric minibuses using parts imported from China, with Ethiopia aiming to import nearly 500,000 electric vehicles under its 10-year development plan, strengthening local employment and utilizing abundant hydroelectricity resources.
