Columbus Mayor acknowledges personal data leak after July 18 cyberattack; city offers free credit monitoring.
Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther admitted that a July 18 cyberattack on the city released personal data of residents and others on the dark web. Cybercriminal group Rhysida claimed responsibility and offered the data for nearly $2 million worth of Bitcoin. In response, the city is offering free credit monitoring through Experian for two years, covering up to $1 million of protection against fraud and identity theft.
