Canberra implements smart LED streetlight upgrades to reduce light pollution and darken skies by 30%.

Light pollution in Australia, predominantly caused by inefficient and unnecessary lighting, is significantly reducing visibility of the night sky, according to a study. Canberra is tackling the issue by implementing smart solutions, such as upgrading streetlights to highly efficient LEDs that are brighter on the ground and darker in the sky. The ACT government and light operator Omexom have been working together since 2019, resulting in Canberra's skies darkening by 30%. Adopting adaptive lighting that adjusts light output during off-peak hours and choosing warmer, orange-white LEDs instead of cool white LEDs are other strategies being implemented to reduce light pollution, save energy, and preserve the night sky.
