Bayelsa State Governor seeks Commonwealth intervention for environmental challenges in oil-impacted Niger Delta communities.
Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri met with Commonwealth Secretary-General Baroness Patricia Scotland, seeking intervention to address environmental challenges in oil-impacted communities of the Niger Delta region. Diri presented a report on the humanitarian and environmental costs of oil exploration in Bayelsa. He criticized oil companies for leaving the area without remediation or compensation, and urged the Commonwealth to support efforts to address the environmental injustice faced by oil-bearing communities.
