Famous cherry tree "Stumpy" cut down for seawall repair, with clones to be replanted.

The gnarled cherry tree, Stumpy, famous on social media, was cut down for a seawall repair project in 2024. The National Arboretum, however, successfully created clones, called "Stumplings," consisting of five self-sustaining plants. These clones, genetically identical to the original tree, could be returned to the Tidal Basin in a few years. The $133 million seawall repair project will improve facilities and visitor experience at the Tidal Basin, despite temporarily affecting the 2025 cherry blossom season.
