DNA analysis identifies World War II soldier U.S. Army Private William Calkins from Oregon, who died in the Philippines in 1942, and his remains will be returned for burial in September.
World War II soldier U.S. Army Private William Calkins, from Oregon, has been identified through DNA analysis and other techniques. His remains, initially buried at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in the Philippines, were exhumed in 2018 and identified by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. Calkins was captured in Bataan province after U.S. troops surrendered to Japanese forces, survived the Bataan Death March, and died on November 1, 1942, at Cabanatuan POW Camp #1. His remains will be returned to Oregon for burial in Hillsboro in September.
