Australian mining firm Fortescue Metals Group begins $50m green iron project at Christmas Creek, Western Australia, producing renewable hydrogen for decarbonized iron production by 2030.
Australian mining firm Fortescue Metals Group has begun construction on a $50m green iron metal project at its Christmas Creek site in Western Australia, marking a significant step towards establishing a green iron industry in the region.
The project will use green hydrogen to produce high-purity pig iron for global steel production, in line with Fortescue's goal to decarbonise its mining operations by 2030.
The facility will produce around 195 tonnes of renewable hydrogen each year, and is supported by the Western Australia Government's Renewable Hydrogen Fund, which provided a $2m grant.
