15,000 youth with self-inflicted injuries treated in EDs; 25% revisited within 90 days, indicating potential for ED-based interventions.

15,000 youth with self-inflicted injuries were treated in Emergency Departments (EDs). 25% visited ED within 90 days before/after injury, suggesting opportunities for ED-based interventions such as suicide risk screening, safety planning, and linking patients to services. Implementing these interventions in any ED, regardless of pediatric mental health resources, can have a life-saving impact. Limited mental health access, particularly in rural and publicly insured communities, may drive greater ED utilization among youth.
