US FDA announces Phase II of voluntary sodium reduction targets, aiming for a 20% decrease in average daily sodium intake.

The US FDA has announced Phase II of its voluntary sodium reduction targets, aiming to lower average daily sodium intake to 2,750 mg per person, a 20% reduction from consumer intake levels prior to 2021. The initiative focuses on commercially processed, packaged, and prepared foods, and follows the initial set of targets issued in October 2021. Reducing sodium in the food supply has the potential to prevent hundreds of thousands of premature deaths and illnesses by helping to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.
