The US Coast Guard acquires and homeports icebreaker Aiviq in Juneau, Alaska, for Arctic presence expansion.

The US Coast Guard has chosen to homeport its newly procured icebreaker, Aiviq, in Juneau, Alaska. The Aiviq, originally built for Arctic oil exploration support, was modified to meet icebreaking standards. Acquired for $125 million, it will reach initial operational capability in two years. The move underscores the Coast Guard's commitment to increasing its national presence in the Arctic region and plans to expand its icebreaking fleet with new Polar Security Cutters.
