FTA orders MTA to enhance subway worker safety due to rising "near-miss" incidents in NYC.
The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) ordered the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to enhance subway worker safety due to a rise in "near-miss" incidents involving transit workers in NYC. In 2023, there were 38 near-miss events, up from 24 in 2022. FTA found unsafe conditions, including non-compliance with safety rules and procedures, inadequate protection, and train operator inattention. The MTA plans to appeal the report, stating they have safety protocols in place and actively investigate incidents.
