UK protects 18th-century East India Company ship, Earl of Abergavenny, connected to the Wordsworth family, sunk in 1805 off Dorset coast.
The UK government granted protection to the 18th-century East India Company cargo ship, Earl of Abergavenny, with historical links to the Wordsworth family. The ship, captained by John Wordsworth, sank off the Dorset coast in 1805 and now holds substantial structural remains in 16m of water. A scuba diving exploration is allowed, but the contents of the shipwreck must remain untouched to preserve its historical significance and connection to the Wordsworth family and East India Company's maritime history.
