Southwest Research Institute detects hydroxyl on metallic asteroid Psyche using NASA's James Webb Space Telescope.

Researchers from Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) have detected hydroxyl molecules on the metallic asteroid Psyche using NASA's James Webb Space Telescope. The presence of hydrated minerals suggests a complex history for the asteroid, which may have originated beyond the 'snow line' where protoplanetary disc temperatures allow volatile compounds to condense. The findings could impact NASA's Psyche spacecraft mission, which is set to arrive at the asteroid in 2029.
