2018 Denver Dockless Mobility Program led to 4.75-fold increase in electric scooter injuries, study finds.

Electric scooter injuries in Denver have significantly increased since the introduction of the city's Dockless Mobility Program in 2018, according to a study led by Dr. Alexander Lauder of Denver Health Medical Center. The research, published in Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research®, found a 4.75-fold increase in patients injured by e-scooters over the first 18 months after the program began. Most injuries occurred late at night and on weekends, with hospital charges for e-scooter injuries averaging $10.4 million per year from 2020 to 2023. The study highlights the need for increased public awareness, clarification of traffic laws, and public safety initiatives to address the dangers of e-scooter use.
