Apple introduces NFC contactless transactions in iOS 18.1 for third-party apps in select countries.

Apple is enabling third-party developers to integrate NFC contactless transactions within their apps using iOS 18.1, making it possible for developers to offer in-app contactless transactions for various purposes such as in-store payments, car keys, transit passes, and more. The NFC and Secure Element (SE) APIs will initially be available in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, the UK, and the US, with more locations to follow. Developers will need to enter into a commercial agreement with Apple, request NFC and Secure Enclave (SE) entitlement, and pay associated fees. Apple's NFC solution is designed to ensure users' privacy and security, leveraging hardware and software technologies such as the Secure Enclave and biometric authentication.
