Steward Health Care plans to close two Massachusetts hospitals by August, approved by a federal bankruptcy judge.

Steward Health Care, a US healthcare company, plans to close two Massachusetts hospitals, Carney Hospital in Dorchester and Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer, by the end of August. This decision was approved by a federal bankruptcy judge, who allowed Steward to bypass state laws requiring 60-day notice for mass layoffs and 120-day notice for hospital closings. The closures will leave approximately 1,250 healthcare workers without job guarantees elsewhere. Steward Health Care is also selling or closing eight hospitals across the state as part of the bankruptcy process.
