North Carolina Governor's office announces plan for hospitals to erase $4B medical debt for 2M residents over a decade.
North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper's office announced that all eligible hospitals have signed on to a plan to erase medical debt for nearly 2 million residents, reducing $4 billion in debt for low to middle-income people over a decade. Hospitals will automatically enroll certain patients in charity care by 2025 and forgive past debt of Medicaid patients by the same date. The initiative could benefit about 2.4 million people, with hospitals earning more by forgiving debt than attempting to collect it.
