Matthews, NC leaders oppose a proposed 1% sales tax increase for Mecklenburg County transit, arguing for more equitable regional solutions.

Matthews, NC leaders are opposing a proposed 1% sales tax increase in Mecklenburg County to fund a transit plan, arguing that it is unfair and underfunded, as it only allocates bus rapid transit for Matthews instead of a rail line that was initially proposed, and creates inequities by funding only the Silver Line East as Bus Rapid Transit while other lines are built as rail. The sales tax plan would go on the ballot in November 2025 if approved. Matthews Mayor John Higdon is strongly opposed to this sales tax legislation and is calling for more equitable regional transit solutions that can better serve the community.
