In Madison County, Mississippi, a 7-foot Columbian mammoth tusk was discovered by fossil hunter Eddie Templeton. The tusk, the first of its kind found in the area, was found in early August and has been transported to the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science for further study and preservation. Columbian mammoths, larger than woolly mammoths, inhabited North America during the last Ice Age and went extinct around 12,000 years ago.
