2 humpback whales entangled in fishing gear were rescued off the coast of British Columbia after a 5-hour operation.
Two humpback whales were rescued after being found tangled together in prawn fishing gear off the coast of British Columbia. The five-hour operation led by Paul Cottrell, the lead on Fisheries and Oceans Canada's Marine Mammal Rescue Unit, described the situation as extremely rare. The rescue team, with support from kayakers and stewardship whale program members, were able to free the whales without injury. This summer has been particularly busy for reports of entangled humpbacks, with approximately two calls a week since early July. The whales were identified as Raza, known for long propeller scar marks, and Mogul, a male who migrates to Hawaii.
